Park and Run

Mixed media Memory Map of a run in June 2023 at The Uplands Farm Nature Conservancy property in Cold Spring Harbor. Seeing a pink Lady Slipper - a wild orchid is - always a highlight.

50

This is a memory map of a 50 mile run I did at Caumsett State Park in September of 2022. I completed 10, five mile loops in preparation for a 100 mile race.

It began a a monotype printed on BFK Rives paper. The collaged papers were made on a gel plate.

To represent the loops I ran I sewed the path using the running stitch.

Sunken Meadow: Memory Map

Mixed media. This automatic drawing, painting, collage is a visual reconstruction of a compilation of long runs I took at Sunken Meadow State Park. I am fascinated by how close the Long Island Sound is to the fresh water of the Sunken Meadow creek that flows into the Nissequogue River.

21: Cold Spring Harbor to Massapequa

9” x 47” Paint and collage on board. This memory map speaks to a 21 mile run from one side of Long Island to the other.

21: Cold Spring Harbor to Massapequa (2)

This is the second memory map I made to remember my 21 mile run. This is a monotype printed using water soluble oil paint.

Thirty Days has November

What began as a humble challenge for myself quickly turned into a passion for working with paper. Each of these represents a morning moment while I was out running. Looking up, looking down, and looking out. Represented are views from Cold Spring Harbor, Centerport, Coindre Hall, Mill Dam, Lloyd Harbor Causeway and Caumsett State Park.

In the Weeds

3’ x 5’ work in progress. I envision this as a set of 4 large drawings showcasing the weeds of each season. This drawing shows winter dock and winter quack grass.

Leaf Litter

Monotype leaves collaged on painted board. Another experiment in not using the rectangle.

In The Weeds: Polygonaceae

While I loved making the above drawing, I didn’t love the drawing. I have also been thinking about how landscape isn’t a rectangle. It’s something we impose. I wanted to break away from the rectangle. I cut the entire Into the Weeds drawing apart and collaged it on to a base of my own design. Before gluing the pieces, I painted the bare wood.

Alluvium

I used a stipple technique and collage to finish this painting. It’ll be hanging in the member showcase at The Huntington Arts Council gallery from June 14 - July 16, 2024.

Acrylic on Board.

This assemblage is titled The Mariner. I used rocks, shells, bones and other detritus from my collection of objects, natural and man made. The cufflink belonged to my great great grandfather who was a Merchant Marine. I was inspired by a class I took called Tiny Worlds given by Allis Markham an award winning taxidermist.
